Interview with
Graphic Designer Phillip Kim
I’d like to share the most efficient and effective branding process for every designer working in the field. At Smile Flower, we always go through a conceptualization process before starting a project, which involves writing a research paper on the project. This serves as a guide for us to find the right methodology. The conceptualization process allows us to refine our individual points of view and opinions in a rational way by using fresh concepts. In this stage, we develop a certain topic for the overall project, putting in more time and effort than in any other stage. By solving the issues and factors that arise in this process, we gradually start to find the direction we should head. That’s how Smile Flower creates new and ideal designs in every project they implement.
I spend a lot of time reflecting on our human limitations, expression, and ethics. The emotions, inadequacies, and challenges of life I uncover during this process naturally blend into my work. In addition to such experience, I think my endless struggle as a designer and unwavering obsession with good concepts and methodologies led to the unique designs of Smile Flower. To us, an ideal design means a systematic design that is both highly visible and practical and focuses on even the tiniest details. Our goal is to communicate with the general public by showcasing visual artwork that embodies our ideology based on various forms of graphical expandability and methodologies.
To me, it feels like modern design is becoming increasingly dichotomous. I advise you to ask yourself more fundamental questions, such as why you must be a designer and what kind of designer you’d like to be. Spend a lot of time concentrating on and thinking hard about what you truly love, taking perspectives and points of view based on various methodologies. Don’t worry about what others think or confine yourself to capitalist ideas. Peace of mind and happiness should not be a goal but felt in the present and during the process because that’s the kind of mindset that I think produces good designs.
