In this class, I aim to share all the practical tips and know-how I've accumulated over the years with aspiring commercial illustrators. I plan to generously share my unique know-how, drawing from diverse project experiences gained as a game character concept artist offline and a freelance illustrator online.

What do you see as your strengths in your work?

I believe it lies in how well I blend a painterly coloring style, which is rough and brushstroke-heavy, into modern commercial illustrations. I've spent a great deal of time considering how to complement my unique traits, which can sometimes be perceived as flaws, so they appear as strengths to others. My greatest strength lies in having overcome this challenge, succeeding as a commercial illustrator while maintaining my distinct identity and style. Furthermore, I strive to capture a character’s inner essence even within vibrant color palettes, and to create compositions that allow my audience to imagine narratives and entire worlds from a single drawing. Through collaborations with various companies, I’ve completed numerous commissioned projects drawing existing characters, aiming to enhance the character’s traits while elevating the overall quality and presentation of the work. My goal extends beyond simply creating beautiful drawings. I strive to convey everything from the temperature of light and the density of color to emotional design and the skills to bring captivating characters to life.

This class focuses on utilizing rough brush strokes and finishing techniques that elevate quality without appearing unfinished. Based on real commercial illustration production, we will explore how to determine ‘how much finishing is enough’ and how to turn roughness into a personal stylistic choice. Rather than merely following trends, I aim to teach concrete methods to create work for the commercial market while maintaining your individuality. You'll learn coloring theory for expressing character emotions through vivid hues, storytelling techniques using color temperature, and how to design both light direction and emotional depth within a single illustration. Furthermore, we’ll examine real-world collaborations with companies, revealing approaches for reinterpreting pre-existing characters to make them more compelling. I explain step-by-step how to handle client feedback, refine concepts, and direct facial expressions and poses in commission work, all while maintaining your identity and presenting fresh work.
