Neg
Hello.
I’m Neg, an Illustrator.
I started drawing illustrations right after graduating from university.
I studied for five years on my own, and currently I work as a freelance illustrator, drawing on my iPad.
What I would like to emphasize is that that even if you start drawing illustrations later on in life, you can definitely improve if you keep my tips in mind, even if you’re only using an iPad to draw.

Ideas versus Inspiration, and Overcoming Artists’ BlockIdeas don’t always come from pure inspiration, but from combining things you’ve seen before. While looking at past works, Illustrator Neg will explain his process for coming up with ideas, and the compositions and motifs that influence his work. He will also demonstrate the process of expanding on your ideas. -
From Understanding Light to Adding Texture and ShadingYou will learn about the properties of light, types of light sources, and reflections. Once you understand why the textures of objects appear the way they do, you’ll be able to draw metal, the surface of water, and objects that appear wet. You will also learn how to shade objects to accurately model their three-dimensionality. -
How to Create Compositions That WorkI will explain composition in detail, as knowing this can help you improve your drawings. I’ll start by explaining how to approach composition, and then I’ll show the effect of camera angles. Afterwards, you’ll practice applying what you have learned to your illustrations.
-
Use Lighting to Control the Viewer’s Gaze and the AtmosphereLearn in detail how to control what the viewer sees through lighting and the effects of light. Furthermore, as a practical exercise, Illustrator Neg will demonstrate lighting to create a drawing with an atmosphere that pulls viewers in. -
Using Tone and Dominant Colors to Change the Feel of an IllustrationTone and dominant colors have a large impact on the impression an illustration gives. Interview with
Illustrator Neg
I love creating illustrations that tell a story. This class explains the basics of drawing people and backgrounds and has practical advice about using photos and improving a drawing, so that you can make your art tell stories, too. Instead of focusing on one area of study, I packed in a wide range of skills that I use when drawing. I will also share videos of how I made some of my previous illustrations while explaining my thought process at the time.
Finding a way to overcome stagnation in my technical development was a challenge. I tried to solve this by developing my ability to observe the things that I needed to correct in my drawings and finding out what knowledge and skills I should have. In order to do this, it wasn’t enough to just draw the things I wanted to draw. I needed to learn about anatomy and the physical world.
If you are a beginner and unsure of what to study, I believe this class will teach you a wide range of things that you need to know in the future. On the other hand, I think this class will help intermediate-level artists realize what is missing in their drawings. If you can draw people to a certain extent but feel that there’s something lacking when you try to draw backgrounds, you’ll be able to understand the reason and learn what you need to know.
There are a lot of people who are interested in drawing, but few people go so far as to study it. I think doing so takes some courage. It takes time to improve your drawing skills, but your progress will be faster if you understand what you need to prioritize in your studies. This class is packed with information about what I have found to be necessary over the past five years of trial and error. I didn’t start drawing until I was an adult and no one taught me how to draw. I want to support people who may be going through the same things, and are feeling lost about how to study drawing.
