illustrator, hide3_JP Details
Hi, I’m hide, a freelance animator and YouTuber.
I’ve worked on numerous anime titles such as ONE PIECE, Pretty Cure, and Attack on Titan as a key animator and animation director. I also run a YouTube channel where I share drawing tutorials and techniques.
In this class, my goal is to teach you, through hands-on practice, the elements that make a character look appealing like costume details, lighting techniques, composition, and posing. I hope this will help those looking to improve the quality of their illustrations to further enhance their expressive skills and solidify their foundational knowledge.

What sets this class apart, and what do you consider your strengths?
In this class, we will focus on detail drawing, which is essential for completing character illustrations, and techniques for creating visually appealing compositions. Beginners often try to make their drawings look polished through coloring alone, but for the coloring to truly shine, a solid foundation must be established first. The most significant feature of this class is its curriculum, which is designed to build the basics necessary to create appealing illustrations right from the pre-coloring stage.
Have you had any challenging experiences while learning illustration? Please also tell us how you overcame them.
When you just draw without a clear plan, there comes a time when everyone hits a wall and struggles. I, too, went through a period of trial and error when I couldn’t seem to get my drawings right, but I eventually overcame that by going back to the basics.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with your students?
I believe that illustration is a field where unique expression can be the greatest appeal. Creative, unconventional expression is important, but it begins with a strong understanding of the fundamentals. I hope you solidify your fundamental expression skills through this class so that you can freely unleash your imagination to your heart's content.

Fundamentals of Drawing the Human Body
To enhance the expressiveness of character illustrations, it is essential to first establish a solid foundation in drawing the basic human form. Before delving into details, I’ll explain the basic structure and proportions needed to draw the full body. I’ll introduce methods for understanding the human form with an emphasis on three-dimensionality and lay the groundwork for stable character depiction.

Clothing Fundamentals for Better Detailing
The quality of the character’s clothing, which constitutes a significant portion of the character’s appearance, determines the overall quality of the illustration. To improve the level of detail not only in the face but also in the clothing, I’ve provided an in-depth explanation of the fundamental theories of clothing illustration, emphasizing the importance of always being mindful of the body beneath the clothes (the basic human form), the thickness of the fabric, and the three-dimensional edges.

Understanding Wrinkles Through Patterns
Once you understand the principles behind them, you’ll be able to draw even the most complex-looking fabric folds regardless of the material or pose. By understanding the mechanics of how folds form, you’ll master all five types of fold patterns, including pulled, creased, and draped folds, and learn rendering techniques that can be applied to any type of clothing.

Composition Basics for More Engaging Art
Learn compositional techniques for creating fun illustrations that not only look great but also leave a lasting impression on viewers. We’ll break down the art of composing shots to maximize a character’s appeal into three key points. By mastering how to transform the impact of your illustrations through pose and placement, you’ll enhance their visual appeal.

Shaping Mood with Lighting
Light and shadow are powerful directorial tools that can dramatically alter the impression of a drawing, even within the same composition. Learn the directing techniques needed to control the entire screen, from the basics of lighting to create the right contrast for your concept, to the direction of light used to convey your intended mood or emotion.

Enhancing Anime Shading with Simple Touches
Take cel shading that even beginners can master quickly and evolve it into something even more appealing. I’ll share coloring and finishing techniques based on a professional animator’s workflow. Learn the secrets to significantly enhancing the quality and impact of your illustrations by adding subtle touches to simple coloring.
