Interview with
Visual Development Artist, Anh Bui
After graduating high school, I attended the Columbus College of Art and Design for one year before dropping out to chase my dreams on a one-way ticket to Los Angeles, CA — the heart of the animation and entertainment industry. I secured my first job as an art trainee through the Nick Artist Program, where I received training in various areas, including character design, prop/color design, and background design/painting. After completing the program, I was assigned to several other projects at Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
The animation industry is oversaturated and unstable due to its contract-based nature. The job pool is small, and everyone seems to know each other, making networking crucial for securing work. The rise of AI art has also contributed to a scarcity mindset. During challenging times, remind yourself why you pursued art in the first place. It's a privilege to create art for a living, and you always have the freedom to change your career path. Stay curious.
The art of spontaneity — things just happening, being in the middle, and living in the moment. Seeing what your art leads to and the opportunities that open up as you continue to put in the effort. Whether to meet people you look up to or end up in funky places you’d never imagine yourself in, as well as the process itself and the journey it leads you through. Art is a vehicle for happiness and all the experience it can reveal to you. It is a powerful tool, so use it wisely.
