Student Reviews
Artrooms' Top Instructor DUMOG:
Hear From Past Students
-
***kyeong KangI used to think I had to master drawing and anatomy before I could start coloring. As a result, it took me a long time to try colored illustrations or illustrations with backgrounds. DUMOG's class taught me how to conceptualize backgrounds on my own and make better use of references. Thanks to the instructor's thoughtful feedback, which respected my intent no matter what sketch I brought, I felt free to try many different things. I especially recommend this class to anyone looking to create illustrations where characters and backgrounds blend naturally.
-
***eun KimI took this class because I wanted to create fan art with backgrounds. I learned how to analyze references, apply perspective more easily, and consider composition, color, and anatomy together. More than anything, it gave me the confidence to finish pieces I would have given up on before.
-
***yeon ParkSince my art focused mostly on characters, I always found it difficult to combine them with backgrounds or build a cohesive mood. With DUMOG's guidance, I gained a better understanding of how anatomy, backgrounds, perspective, and composition work together. I can now create illustrations with backgrounds instead of shying away from them.
-
***jin ChoiI used to focus mostly on characters, so whenever I tried to draw illustrations with backgrounds, I just never knew where to begin. This class taught me how to apply perspective, color, and light to my work, as well as how to capture details that are easy to miss during the planning stage. It also made blending characters into the overall mood so much easier.
-
***min ParkI took this class because I was getting tired of drawing similar things and found it difficult to bring the images in my head to life. DUMOG taught me how to put tricky perspective concepts into practice. Learning about anatomy, backgrounds, and color also helped me rediscover the joy of drawing.

Class Highlights
Planning Character Situations Based on Genre and Time of Day
Creating a great illustration requires more than drawing a cute character. It starts with choosing the genre, time of day, and situation. Conceptualize scenes where the character's expressions, poses, and environment work together naturally, guided by genre, situation, time of day, angle, gaze, and objects.
Weaving Characters into Backgrounds Through Perspective and Spatial Design
Using 1-, 2-, and 3-point perspective and the placement of natural elements, structures, and objects, create spaces with depth so characters can fit naturally into the background. Plus, learn to build rich detail by planning character positions, visual flow, and the distance between background elements.
Coloring and Retouching to Enhance Depth with Light and Color
Preserve the mood of the rough sketch through to the final illustration by combining lighting direction, light areas and shadows, time-of-day color palettes, and final retouching into a cohesive process. This class goes beyond creating colors that look good; it explores how lighting can emphasize the distance between characters and backgrounds while bringing the scene's mood into focus.
