Hello, I’m Takuan Paradise, a CG artist. I work on 3D CG video productions in a wide range of genres, from music videos and ads to anime and trailers. These days, I’m a freelance CG designer, and I also join a variety of projects as a member of “nim,” a creative studio.

In this class, I’ll show you how to create cinematic full-CG shots with Houdini. It’s not just about building scenes. I’ll teach you techniques that take advantage of what makes Houdini unique, so you can finish beautiful, striking scenes quickly and efficiently.

What are your unique strengths as an instructor, and what sets this class apart from others?

When people hear “Houdini,” many think of effects software. But Houdini is also an outstanding tool for shot production. In this class, you’ll learn how to use HDAs and procedural workflows to create high-quality scenes quickly and efficiently. The class also focuses on crafting beautiful visuals through lighting, shading, and composition, so you’ll build a well-balanced skill set across the entire production process.

What do people studying this field find most challenging, and how can this class help them overcome it?

This class is designed for people who want to try environment-focused video production in Houdini but don’t know where to start, as well as those who have picked up effects and modeling skills but still feel less confident with environment creation and lighting. By focusing on environments and lighting, you’ll learn concrete ways to make your entire scene captivating.

What do you focus on most when creating video, and what skills bring that to life?

I care about creating striking, memorable visuals, like a single scene from a film. To do that, I think you need a deep understanding of visual elements such as composition, color, and guiding the viewer’s eye, along with the lighting and layout techniques to bring them to life.

Do you have a message for students taking this class?

There’s a lot to learn in 3D CG, and I know many people find that tough. The sheer number of steps in the production process can feel overwhelming, too. I hope this class helps ease those challenges, even a little, and sparks the joy and sense of accomplishment that come with creating. As you learn, I hope you’ll enjoy the moment your work takes shape and you can feel your own growth.

Solaris × Karma XPU Fundamentals

Learn the basics of Solaris and get a solid grounding in Karma XPU, the latest physically based rendering engine. You’ll also explore XPU’s current weaknesses and limitations, along with solutions to work around them.

Tackle Hands-On Exercise Projects

This class goes beyond theory and technique. To help you put your knowledge to work, you’ll take on two hands-on exercise projects and turn what you’ve learned into finished output.

Cinematic Lighting & Shading Skills

Master lighting and shading, the skills that matter most in cinematic shot production. Starting from your light setup, you’ll create atmosphere by making the most of the contrast between light and shadow.

Secrets to Finishing High-Quality Work Fast

Sharpen your ability to finish high-quality work under tight deadlines. You’ll build an efficient workflow that takes advantage of procedural techniques, and learn how to use HDAs to cut down on repetitive tasks.
