Sehee KangOrsay Cake, Seoul (Cake studio owner) Inyoung Jeon’s class appealed to me because, unlike other flower cake classes which do not vary much in style, her cake designs had such a natural look, just like fresh flowers. After a year of waiting, I finally got to join her class!
What I wanted to learn was not just techniques, but how to design by “feel.”
I had to travel two hours to get there, but it was worth every second. Rather than merely sharing her expertise, Inyoung Jeon’s explanations went even further, such as explaining why a certain color should be used and what kind of temperature a design conveys. Her explanations always had something worth learning, and really awakened my baking senses.
I was afraid of creating flowers, as it seemed quite difficult, but with Inyoung’s kind and detailed guidance, I learned how in no time! Practicing one at a time, I felt myself growing more confident and content with what I made. The biggest takeaway was learning how to practice and develop my skills on my own after the class finished.
I’ve run a cake studio for nine years now, both selling cakes and teaching classes. Looking back, I realize that what I learned in class was not only skills, but how to stay true to myself.
