Why Take This Class?
Many elements contribute to making your character stand out: visuals, composition, and color, amongst others. However, one underrated yet crucial aspect is the appropriate use of 'facial expression changes' tailored to the scene. Adding subtle yet impactful emotional expressions can breathe life into an illustration that might otherwise seem flat. Even without dynamic action, a character's identity can be conveyed through rich expression alone.
Analyze how your character would use expressions in various situations and explore the most effective ways to maximize their impact. Begin creating a character imbued with your unique personality and emotional depth!

Webcomic Artist & Animator
RandoWis
Hello, my name's Rando!
I'm an indie animator, webcomic artist, and content creator, apparently known for the expressive faces in my works. In this course, allow me to teach you how I create and use the faces I draw so that you may have a broader perspective on developing and applying them yourself.
As I have no industry experience whatsoever, my methods and techniques are self-taught and improvised. Hence, whether you're an artist or just curious, I hope what I share can help you expand your knowledge of creating expressions and personalities for your characters!

Class Highlights
Bring Out the Facial Uniqueness of Your Characters
Learn how to draw faces and experiment with different shapes and sizes to create unique results. Your characters will never suffer from same-face syndrome again!
Push It Beyond the Emotional Limit
Sometimes we aim for our character's faces to visually express the most visceral vulgarities, but all we end up drawing is an innocent "darn it." Let's fix that.
Understanding Faces Beyond the Visual
Making a face in everything you do all the time will drive you insane. Timing and purpose are crucial for leaving an impact. Let's discuss how and when to use faces for maximum effect.

You'll Learn
-
Basics on Drawing Heads and FacesIf you're not confident in drawing heads and faces, or if you'd like a different perspective on how to do so, don't worry — we will go through my basic foundations for drawing both: proportions, angles, perspectives, and more! -
The Philosophy Behind Facial ExpressionsCharacters always make faces, but understanding concepts beyond the visual might allow us to create expressions with more depth and meaning. -
Create a Myriad of Facial ExpressionsLet's explore the elements of the face that make up an expression and how we can manipulate them to create all kinds of emotional results!
-
Pushing Expressions Beyond Their Limits to Create ImpactWe'll go through how to push your drawn expressions further to convey the same message, but more strongly. For example, our characters may be angry, but we can definitely make them angrier! -
Adding Details That Stand OutNot every expression needs to be extreme to stand out. Adding minor details that make a major impression when looking at the big picture? Now that's what I'm talking about! -
Making Faces That Leave an ImpressionLess visual, but more philosophical! Together, we will deep dive into when and how I believe facial expressions can be used in our work to create a more memorable experience.
