Hi there, nice to meet you! My name is Iffah, commonly known as 'Mmumechii' on social media. I am a freelance illustrator mostly known for my realistic food paintings and anime art. I would love to share my techniques and process with you through this course!
For many people, including me, art is a way to express emotions; whether it be a passionate love for a particular character or capturing the scene of a delicious dessert, drawing allows us to share these feelings with others. However, depicting your ideas on a canvas is much more complicated than sketching the image inside your mind. Sadly, I have already seen so many beginner artists give up out of frustration from not seeing the desired results from their practice. Is there a specific reason why you chose this specific topic/themes?
I love painting realistic food art, but I am also very fond of anime-style character art — that is why one day, I thought, why not combine them? The theme of my class is fusing food and anime into one illustration, almost like how espresso and milk can be blended to make a delicious latte! I like to capture moments of people enjoying food; hence, most of my illustrations feature a character having an inviting meal. I hope that with this class, I can help others achieve similar results and make people enjoy art as much as I do!

Could you please share how you started your journey in the industry?
For as long as I can remember, I have loved cartoons and animated movies; I grew up drawing my favorite characters from them as a hobby. Although I am originally from Malaysia, I spent most of my childhood growing up in different countries, including the Netherlands, England, and Brunei. As a result, I've had several different art teachers, each with varying painting techniques and valuable advice. Thus, the artist I am today results from a blend of various experiences ranging from Western to Eastern art perspectives.
In 2020, I started sharing my art with others on social media, and to my surprise, many people enjoyed my work. I began to dabble in food and background commissions, during which I earned some extra money while developing my skills. By 2023, I started taking on more professional projects such as promotional illustrations and artist alley boothing. A significant component of my success is mainly from my social media, which allowed me to connect with many clients. I'm sure the younger me would be very proud of the artist I am currently!

What do you think is the most important trait(s) to success in your industry?
First and foremost, all successful artists must have a love for art. To become a successful artist, countless hours of hard work and practice must go into developing the skills of a professional illustrator, which would only be possible for someone with a passion for art to do. While natural talent does give you a head start at drawing, love for drawing will eventually take you further.
Successful artists must also have an eye for aesthetics — to create something beautiful, you must identify and understand what is attractive. Before even beginning to start drawing, an artist needs to observe and understand the subject before being able to portray it on a canvas. Thus, to become a successful artist, you must first learn to 'see'! What are the proportions? Is it a smooth or sharp edge? Are the lines parallel? A lot more thought and decisions go into drawing than most people realize.
Being disciplined is also a significant factor when comparing successful and unsuccessful artists. Disciplined artists can always make time in their busy schedules to practice their skills. Art can sometimes be a long and perilous journey, which can be highly demotivating. Still, anyone who perseveres and continues developing their art is on the path to becoming a successful artist.
