Hi, I’m figure painter Shinya Suzuki. My work involves creating samples for mass-produced commercial figures, producing display samples for garage kits, and doing garage kits commissioned by individual clients. I also paint samples of figures ranging from female figures to monsters and beasts.
The keys to success in this line of work are painting speed and color choices. You need theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills to ensure efficiency. In this class, I’m going to share the knowledge and techniques I’ve gained so far and the unique skills I developed by applying them.

Question.01
What is the biggest challenge faced by people studying this field, and how can this class help them overcome it?
People studying figure painting commonly struggle with getting a grasp of the practical work process, even after learning it through images and explanations. This class, on the other hand, explains figure painting through the medium of videos, allowing students to observe how I move my hand or use the airbrush in a far more intuitive way.

What led you to start painting figures?
I was originally a garage kit collector, paying professional painters to make garage kits for me. Seeing them work firsthand made me want to try painting myself. So, I started it as a hobbyist. Then, I took an increasing number of commissions from individual clients, which eventually led me to become a freelance figure painter.
Question.03
What did you struggle with when studying this, and what was your strategy to overcome it?
Sometimes I couldn’t understand how figures were painted at all, even when looking at the works of professionals at events or exhibits. So I followed figure painters on social media and saved their posts about techniques so I could practice them. I also read articles in magazines. I definitely recommend going to exhibits and events and talking to the artists in person.

Please share your views on the potential of figure painting as an industry.
Most working in the field say it’s only been a few years that figure painters have been gaining attention. There’s a growing interest in the job, and superstars are emerging in figure painting, too, not just in model creation. Nevertheless, the number of figure painters is pretty limited still, which makes it a field with a lot of possibilities for newcomers.
